What products and services does Inspired Energy offer?

Inspired Energy specializes in the design and manufacturing of portable power solutions for OEM device manufacturers. Our product lineup includes:

  • Smart lithium-ion batteries: rechargeable smart battery packs with built-in safeties and intelligence, reporting battery health, state of charge and performance data to the host device.
  • Smart chargers: single and multi-bay chargers designed to work with our smart batteries, delivering optimized charging cycles to extend battery life.
  • Embeddable charger boards: battery management and communication boards that integrate into OEM devices.
  • Holsters & accessories: carry solutions, connectors and accessories to complete device integrations.
  • Custom OEM solutions: fully engineered custom battery and charger designs for applications where standard products won't suit.

We also offer standalone manufacturing services: injection molding, PCB manufacturing, testing and certification support, and label creation.

What is a smart battery and how does it differ from a regular battery?

A smart battery uses electronics to communicate with its host device in order to protect, monitor and control all aspects of its operation. The electronics help every cell in the pack perform at its best.

  • Communication: our smart batteries use the industry-standard SMBus (System Management Bus) protocol to provide diagnostics and performance updates to the host device.
  • Fuel gauging: smart batteries report state of charge. A regular battery cannot tell your device how much charge remains.
  • State of health reporting: the battery reports on its own condition, so devices can alert users before a failure occurs.
  • Longer service life: optimized charging, top-tier cells and intelligent power management help smart batteries outlast conventional packs.

Where are Inspired Energy products designed and manufactured?

Inspired Energy products are designed, engineered and manufactured on our single campus in Newberry, Florida, USA.

The Newberry campus houses PCB assembly, injection molding and tooling, testing, label creation, battery pack assembly and final quality testing. From there, our products ship to customers in over 96 countries.

Where does Inspired Energy source its lithium-ion cells?

We source lithium-ion cells exclusively from the world's top-tier, globally recognized cell manufacturers. This is a non-negotiable standard at Inspired Energy, applied to every product in our catalog, including our lowest-cost standard batteries.

The cell is the most critical component in any battery pack. We select and qualify cells program by program, choosing the cell chemistry, form factor and manufacturer that suit each application. We do not use second-tier, gray-market or unbranded cells under any circumstances.

Is Inspired Energy ISO certified?

Yes. Inspired Energy's Newberry, Florida campus is ISO 9001:2015 certified. For questions about our quality system, contact us.

How does Inspired Energy ensure product quality?

Quality assurance runs through the whole production process at our Newberry campus, inside our ISO 9001:2015 certified quality system:

  • Cell qualification before pack assembly
  • PCB inspection and functional testing before integration
  • Completed pack electrical testing, including capacity, voltage and communication checks
  • In-house engineering review of every custom design before production release

Because these processes happen on one campus, we keep direct control over quality at every step.

Where can I find data sheets and product documents?

Data sheets and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are linked from each product's page in the catalog. Shipping guidance and the lithium-ion and NiMH SDS are on our Shipping & compliance page.

For UN 38.3 test summaries, REACH and RoHS declarations, CAD files, technical drawings or other supporting documents, contact us.

Smart batteries

Technical questions about our battery products

What is the difference between an HD model and a QE model?

HD and QE versions of a battery share the same core smart battery features (SMBus, BMS and fuel gauging) and differ in their safety approvals. The certifications each part carries are listed on its product page, so the quickest check is to compare the two pages.

If your device is sold into markets that require formal battery safety approvals, choose the variant early in your design. Contact us if you are not sure which one you need.

What is SMBus and how do your batteries communicate with host devices?

SMBus (System Management Bus) is a two-wire serial interface derived from I²C. Inspired Energy batteries use SMBus to report battery data to the host device, including:

  • State of charge: remaining capacity as a percentage
  • State of health: estimated battery condition
  • Temperature
  • Pack voltage
  • Charge and discharge current
  • Cycle count
  • Charging parameters: the battery tells the charger how much current and voltage to apply

Can I use multiple Inspired Energy batteries in a single device?

Yes. Because Inspired Energy smart batteries share the same SMBus address, a system with more than one battery needs a 1-to-2 DEMUX (for example, the PCA9544A) so it can talk to each battery independently.

The DEMUX acts as a communication controller, giving each battery separate addressing so data reaches your system without conflicts. Our engineering team can help with DEMUX selection and implementation during your design.

Can you create a custom battery for my specific OEM device?

Yes. Custom OEM battery design is one of our core specialties. We work directly with your engineering team from initial specification through certified production. Options include:

  • Cell chemistry, configuration (series and parallel) and form factor
  • Custom BMS firmware: charge profiles, communication objects, performance parameters
  • Custom connector and pinout configuration
  • Custom injection-molded enclosure, tooled in-house
  • Custom labeling: your brand, regulatory markings, barcodes
  • Certification support for your target markets

We also build custom hybrids of our standard batteries, modifying an existing design to hit a specific voltage, capacity or form factor without full ground-up development. That can shorten your time to market.

See custom solutions or contact us to start a discussion.

What do the letters at the start of a model number mean?

The leading letter of an Inspired Energy model number indicates the product series: N-series, P-series and S-series batteries, each with matching chargers. The catalog filters by series, and each product page lists the parts it works with.

How should lithium-ion batteries be stored?

Our rules of thumb for lithium-ion battery care:

  • Store batteries at 40 to 60% state of charge in a cool, dry place
  • Check batteries in inventory every 4 months, especially if a battery must perform without recharging when it comes out of storage
  • Do not store lithium-ion batteries for longer than 6 months at low state of charge
  • Ideal storage temperature: 15 to 25°C (59 to 77°F)
  • Keep away from heat sources, direct sunlight and high humidity
  • Store in the original packaging to prevent short circuits

For long-term inventory, set up a rotation schedule with periodic recharging so state of charge stays above the minimum in the product datasheet.

How do your batteries perform at low temperatures?

Operating and charging temperature ranges are listed on each product's datasheet. Actual runtime at temperature depends heavily on your device's current draw, so we recommend testing in your device at operating temperature.

Charging in the cold needs care: most lithium-ion cells should not be charged below 0°C. If your application has to run in extreme cold, contact us to discuss cell options.

What happens when a battery model is updated or discontinued?

When we update a battery model to a newer revision (for example, the NH2054HD29 replaced by the NH2054HD34), the new model is designed as a drop-in replacement that meets or exceeds the performance of the previous one.

We make every effort to notify existing customers before discontinuing a model and to provide a clear replacement path. Product pages show which model a part replaces, so you can update your device documentation. For long-term programs, talk to us about product lifecycle and lifetime-buy options during purchasing planning.

Are your batteries REACH and RoHS compliant?

REACH and RoHS declarations are available for our products on request. These declarations matter for EU market access and for customers whose own customers require environmental compliance documentation. Contact us with the part numbers you need.

How should spent Inspired Energy batteries be disposed of or recycled?

Recycling of Inspired Energy smart battery packs is strongly encouraged.

  • USA: every battery includes instructions for contacting the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC) for recycling. Expended batteries are not considered hazardous waste in the USA.
  • EU: dispose of expended packs in line with the relevant EC directives and national, regional and local environmental regulations. EU waste code: 16 06 05.
  • Canada: expended packs are not considered hazardous waste. Dispose of them in line with local, provincial and federal law.
  • Australia: take packs for recycling at an appropriate collection depot.

Never put battery packs in a fire, municipal waste or landfill, and do not break packs open before disposal. Batteries involved in a fire may be considered hazardous waste: follow local regulations.

When should I choose a standard battery vs. a custom design?

Choose a standard battery when:

  • One of our existing form factors fits your device's battery bay
  • Our standard voltage and capacity options meet your runtime requirements
  • Your timeline needs a part that is already in production
  • You want an off-the-shelf design with existing approvals to shorten your time to market

Consider a custom design when:

  • Your device needs a form factor our standard line doesn't offer
  • You need a voltage or capacity combination standard products don't cover
  • Your application needs a proprietary connector, enclosure or firmware
  • You want custom labels or branding

Many customers start with a standard battery for prototyping and early development, then move to a custom design for production. We support that path and can help you plan the transition.

Chargers & boards

Questions about our charging solutions and embedded boards

Which charger is compatible with my battery?

Compatible chargers are listed on each battery's product page. Chargers are matched to the battery series: N-series batteries with CH-series chargers (CH1000, CH4000, CH5000 and others), P-series batteries with PH-series chargers, and S-series batteries with S-series chargers.

We recommend pairing Inspired Energy batteries with our matching chargers. A non-matched charger may not read the battery's SMBus charging parameters correctly, which can lead to poor charging or damage.

How does a smart charger optimally charge a smart battery?

A smart charger talks directly to the battery's BMS over SMBus. It either listens for the battery's ChargingCurrent() and ChargingVoltage() broadcasts or polls those registers for the battery's current needs.

Both values adjust dynamically following the JEITA profile (Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association), which tunes lithium-ion charging to temperature, state of charge and other factors. The charger then applies the requested current and voltage, so the battery charges at the right rate for its condition. This communication-driven approach extends cycle life compared with a fixed-profile charger.

Can I use a third-party charger with your batteries?

For best results, use Inspired Energy batteries with our own chargers.

A third-party charger must be able to read the battery's SMBus ChargingCurrent() and ChargingVoltage() parameters and apply them correctly. A charger that does not communicate over SMBus applies a fixed charge profile, which may not be optimal and can shorten cycle life. Non-compatible chargers may void warranty coverage. Contact us if you need a specific charger evaluated.

What power cords are available for desktop chargers?

We offer three power cords for our desktop chargers:

  • North America: NEMA 5-15P plug
  • Europe: CEE 7/7 (Schuko) plug
  • UK: BS 1363 plug

Our desktop chargers use a standard IEC C14 inlet, so if your region needs a different cord, standard IEC cords are widely available locally.

Can embeddable charger boards be integrated with existing systems?

Yes, provided your system has the necessary supply voltage and physical space for the board. Check these before you integrate:

  • Input supply voltage and current capacity match the board specification
  • Board dimensions fit inside your enclosure
  • Thermal management: boards generate heat while charging and need airflow or thermal contact

Are the embeddable charger boards customizable?

Yes. Our embeddable charger boards can be customized for specific OEM applications, including adjusted charging algorithms, modified communication interface parameters and form factor changes to fit your device.

Because our PCB manufacturing is in-house at our Newberry campus, we can take on engineering changes without the lead time and cost of an outside board manufacturer.
