Air
Air shipping: IATA regulations
Lithium-ion batteries are classified as dangerous goods under the IATA (International Air Transport Association) Dangerous Goods Regulations. Inspired Energy batteries must be shipped in compliance with the IATA DGR when they travel by air.
IATA updates its lithium battery rules every year. The points below are general guidance; always consult the current edition of the DGR for your battery type, state of charge and shipment configuration.

How our batteries ship by air
- PI 965Lithium-ion cells and batteries shipped alone, separate from devices. Section rules apply based on the battery's Wh rating.
- State of chargeLithium-ion batteries shipped alone are generally required to travel at no more than 30% state of charge. Verify with your carrier.
Ground & sea
Ground and ocean freight
-
DOT: US domestic ground
Domestic US ground shipments of lithium-ion batteries are regulated by the US Department of Transportation under 49 CFR Parts 171 to 180, as UN3480 (batteries alone). Depending on the Wh per package and per shipment, a shipment follows the limited quantity provisions or the fully regulated requirements.
-
IMDG: international ocean
International sea shipments are governed by the IMDG Code (International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code). Lithium-ion batteries are Class 9 miscellaneous dangerous goods, and IMDG documentation, packaging and stowage rules apply.
-
Packaging
Inspired Energy batteries ship in the manufacturer's original packaging. Our packaging meets all IATA requirements. In any shipment, batteries must be protected against short circuit with terminals insulated, packed to prevent movement, and marked with the UN markings for the shipment's classification.
Transport testing
UN 38.3 compliance
UN 38.3 is the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Part III, Section 38.3: the internationally recognized battery safety test standard for transporting lithium cells and batteries by any mode. All commercially available Inspired Energy lithium-ion battery packs have been tested and comply with it. Each battery's product page links its UN 38.3 test summary.
T1: Altitude simulation
Simulates the low pressure of air transport
T2: Thermal test
Cycles the battery through temperature extremes
T3: Vibration
Tests resistance to vibration typical of transport
T4: Shock
Tests resistance to mechanical shock from drops and handling
T5: External short circuit
Tests the battery's response to an external short
T6: Impact / crush
Tests cell response to mechanical impact or crush
T7: Overcharge
Tests the response to an overcharge condition
T8: Forced discharge
Tests cell response to forced over-discharge
